Important

If you were academically dismissed from Iowa State University, there are certain guidelines and procedures that you must follow to attempt to resume your studies at Iowa State through a reinstatement petition process. Please read these materials very carefully, because they are the basis upon which a decision will be made concerning your request to reenter in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Prerequisites

Prior to being considered for reinstatement to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) you will need to take and complete a minimum of 6 semester credits of graded course work at another accredited university, college, or community college and attain a GPA of 2.25 on those credits.

All international students must file the International Undergraduate Returnee Form ANY time they plan to reenter or return to Iowa State.

If you are a domestic student and will have been gone from the University for more than 12 months prior to the term you wish to reenter, you must file the Undergraduate Reentry Form with the Office of the Registrar. If you have been away from Iowa State for fewer than 12 months, you will not need to file this form.

Reinstatement after a first dismissal

Reinstatement after a first dismissal will not be considered until you have been absent from ISU for at least one semester, with the summer not counted as a semester. Petitions for reinstatement must be submitted at least 45 calendar days prior to the beginning of the anticipated semester of reinstatement. (Students denied by another college also must meet the 45-day requirement in order to be considered.) Specific deadlines are listed on the LAS College's Academic Standards page. Late or incomplete petitions will not be accepted.

Reinstatement after a second dismissal

Reinstatement after a second dismissal will not be considered until you have been absent from the University for at least two semesters, with the summer is not counted as a semester. Petitions for reinstatement must be submitted no later than 70 calendar days prior to the beginning of the anticipated semester of reinstatement. (Students denied by another college also must meet the 70 day requirement in order to be considered.) Specific deadlines are listed on the LAS College's Academic Standards page. Late or incomplete petitions will not be accepted.

Your petition to be reinstated for a second time must present concrete evidence of academic progress, typically a transcript from at least one other school demonstrating a minimum GPA of 2.50 in academically rigorous courses and potentially completion of an Associate of Arts degree. You must also address why you were not able to fulfill all the conditions of your prior reinstatement agreement. Your petition should be accompanied by letters of support from faculty, adviser(s), counselors, etc., who can comment on your performance, as well as your readiness to successfully complete your proposed program of study.

Reinstatements for a second time are only provided to students that are clearly a reasonable prospect for earning a degree at ISU.

Second reinstatement petitioners are required to meet with the LAS Academic Standards Committee after submitting a complete petition and before a decision will be made.

Reinstatement after a third dismissal

Generally students will not be reinstated in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences after a third dismissal from the University.
